Meet the Troupe
Nomadic Magic Tribal Dance began in August 2007 with Roma's classes at the Art Institute & Gallery. It is the first and only all tribal bellydance troupe on the Eastern Shore. Roma is Gypsy Caravan Certified and teaches and directs her students based on the tribal vocabulary using improvisational cues and formations giving this dance its unique and captivating feel. Tribal is a dance you can take with you anywhere and practice with anyone. You can see "Roma and the Nomads" perform at Namaste Indian Cuisine or at various events on the shore.
Roma
I began bellydancing in Arizona in 2003 after being exposed to it at festivals and events. I was immediately drawn to tribal style after seeing a duet performed in perfect synchronicity. I took classes at Domba studios in Tempe. When I moved to marytland in 2005 I joined a local troupe. I appeared on television and performed. I served as publicity director for Arabian lights Dance Company.
I began teaching tribal style bellydance in 2007 at the local Art Institute & Gallery. I continued to train with Fat Chance & Gypsy Caravan DVD's and workshops with other tribal dancers. The troupe, Nomadic Magic was formed soon after classes began. My classes organize basic tribal improv moves into levels with cues for group dancing. After about a year we began performing under "Roma & the Nomads" at Namaste Indian Cuisine every final Friday.
I am know Gypsy Caravan certified as of 2009. There are 4 different levels according to the vocabulary of moves, cues, layers, turns, combos, and variations. Tribal continues to grow and be defined. It is an evolving dance that seeks to link history, culture, art, dance, and nature.

Raina (February, 2009)
I became interested in bellydancing when I saw Roma on the morning news (WBOC) giving a demo and talking about her class. I always loved to dance and it looked like fun so I tried the trial class in January 2008 and started the 6 week class but couldn't finish due to a back injury not related to the class. I took the class again in January 2009 and had a blast. I like the fact that you can improvise with Tribal-style as well as do choreographed pieces. It's great exercise and a lot of fun and I love the music and costumes.
Sephira (October, 2007)
I started belly dancing in Jan. '07, but didn't start tribal dancing until Oct. '07. I thought it sounded fun, so I decided to try it and have been hooked ever since. I heard about classes over at Merritt and then at the AI&G, I had previously been taking pottery classes there and was on the mailing list. It's fun because it's all improv and you don't have to have a set routine. I love the costumes, especially the coin belts, and hip scarves! I also ballroom dance, and practice yoga and pilates.
Fran (August, 2007)
Fran's interest in belly dancing goes back to the early 1980s when she took a class in cabaret dancing while living in England. She renewed her interest when she took Basic Tribal Dancing with Roma in 2007. The eleenat and deceptively simple moves, as well as the pure fun of dancing appeal to her. A serious equestrian, Fran finds the flexibility and muscle isolation required for dancing help her as a rider. The tribal troupe concept and improvisation of dancing with friends stir a deep emotional contact with the spirit of all women, past and present, around the world.
